...it stings now that I'm finally trying to utilize "or BuyItNow" as a selling tool. For an item with a $180 start price, c'mon, I'm hoping/praying for a single bid! What's the chance that I'll find a can't wait buyier who's willing to spring an extra $36 ? Pretty slim, I think.

For me, only once (ever) has that happened. $120 start or $160 BIN ~~ fella bought it, plus several other items at the same time, same invoice. Smooth transaction.

In most cases, I feel it will seem hokey-ish to setup such a wide spread between start BIN price.

Are any of you AB forum participants self-hosting a shop?

I've been "around the block" dabbling and exploring the various "open source" apps.
For my use, it has seemed that each app has several "fatal flaws".
In general, fuggaboutit -- magento and several others are waaaaay to resource intensive to be served from a shared hosting account.

I nixed Magento and OpenCart from my shortlist because they seem to embrace a "core app is free, but pay through the nose for paid extensions" paradigm.

I considered, and investigated, a number of paid apps... and I really wanted to like SquirrelCart but, c'mon, the app (several years "strong", now in "version 3something") can only accomodate ONE product image per product?!?

After trialing zencart and cs-cart in a localhost environment, I also nixed those from my shortlist, regarding them as examples of nightmarish, pizzpoor "code spaghetti".

Prestashop is where I'm at (what I'm monkeying with, on localhost) at the moment.
Mmm, that's 10mos+ worth of monkeying / recoding... and I've still not used it to launch a live shop.

During the past year or so, I've advised several friends/relatives "don't bother" trying to setup your own shop, it's too much of a PITA (not worth the setup, maintenance, learning curve, for a mom/pop operator) ~~ just use bonanza.com and/or etsy etc. to host your shop(s).

My renewed interest in self-hosting stems from, among a few other things, suddenly finding that I'm "having a tough time taking bonanza.com seriously". Fashion buyback? Okaaaaaaay.... what?!? I'm not feeling immediate competition (I don't sell clothing) but I'm certainly sensing a conflict of interest (or at least an "aimless" agenda by the site owners). Remember 1000marrkets? I just discovered it. I haven't opened a store there yet, but am favorably impressed by what I saw (features, FAQ, support forum posts). I'm not posting to "recommend" the site -- I'm posting to find out its pros-n-cons from any AB reader who is familiar with the site.

Wondering why I haven't heard it mentioned here at AB, why it's absent from evyPlaceISell directory, and why backlinks to its domain seem to be scarce.

It is free as in FREE for sellers to use.
